# TK: Assessment and Advanced Learning

Use independent work, fresh examples, and recorded support to choose the next lesson.

## Start with what the child can show

Observe entry skills in conversation, play, stories, quantities, movement, self-care, and art. Use family knowledge and the child's strongest communication modes. Record the task, exact response, date, language, materials, and assistance. Do not infer low reasoning from limited English or limited handwriting.

Use these descriptions separately for each goal: **not yet observed**, **with support**, **independent in a familiar task**, and **independent in a new task**. They are planning categories, not a standardized scale. A single performance is a sample; revisit the idea later and in a different setting before claiming stable learning. No arbitrary pass percentage or timed drill defines mastery here.

## What advanced work looks like

| Skill | Evidence to collect | Misleading shortcut |
|---|---|---|
| Sentence composition | Child says a complete idea, writes it using known spellings or plausible sound-based spellings, reads it back, and improves meaning or conventions | Copying an adult's sentence without explaining it |
| Beginning reading | Child blends an unfamiliar word made of taught sound-spellings, reads an original sentence, and explains its meaning | Naming words from a memorized page or pictures |
| Subtraction | Child represents a new take-away situation, identifies start/change/result, explains the remaining amount, and connects it to an equation when ready | Reciting subtraction facts without matching the story |
| Number reasoning | Child constructs and compares a requested quantity and explains how rearranging affects the total | Reciting the count sequence alone |
| Investigation | Child records an observation, distinguishes it from a prediction, and revises an explanation | Repeating a science term |
| Participation | Child applies a plan, help strategy, or agreement in a real situation with recorded support | Performing a rehearsed social script once |

Use the fresh tasks in the lesson plans after instruction and revisit them with changed names, objects, or arrangements. Keep instructional practice separate from the independent sample. If a child needs a prompt, record it and resume teaching; do not turn a learning check into a stressful event.

## Respond to the evidence

If the child cannot represent the idea, return to concrete action and language. If representation is secure but symbols are not, connect each symbol to what the child has shown. If a familiar task is secure, change a relevant feature to check transfer. If the concept transfers, extend the reasoning or use the next applicable standard. Regroup flexibly and preserve all domains, play, and access to peers.

## What a 99th-percentile claim requires

A percentile ranks performance within a defined norm group on a particular measure. It is not the percentage of curriculum mastered. The same child can have different percentiles for different skills and tests.

A defensible claim requires a named, appropriate age-normed achievement measure; current publisher information about age, language, norms, and intended use; qualified administration under the manual; and interpretation of measurement uncertainty. Select it with the school assessment specialist for the actual purpose. This curriculum does not select a test, create norms, or supply secure test items. Do not train children on protected test content or ignore publisher retest rules.

An independent assessment may describe unusually advanced achievement in a measured skill. It cannot validate a guarantee that every child completing this curriculum will score at or above the 99th percentile. The AERA, APA, and NCME Testing Standards inform these distinctions. Report actual evidence and limitations, rather than a fabricated overall percentile.

## Portfolio and transition record

Keep dated work and brief observation records for each domain. Include an initial sample, a later application, support used, the child's explanation, and the next teaching choice when these are available. Use the teacher guide's record page. Share appropriate information with families and the receiving teacher under school privacy procedures. Document missing evidence rather than filling it with an assumed result.
