Learning sequence

Start with the child's people and classroom. Compare past and present using an account or object, represent familiar places, explore community roles, and participate in fair decisions. Include different family structures and cultures without asking a child to represent a whole group. The California PTKLF History-Social Science domain guides the scope.

Then and now

Use a teacher-provided classroom photograph or drawing from an earlier stage of a project and a current view. Children identify what changed and what stayed the same. Ask, “How can we tell?” Invite accounts from different people and distinguish a remembered account from something visible in the record. Personal photographs are optional; no family purchase or disclosure is required.

A map someone can use

Walk an accessible classroom route. Model how a symbol can represent a real place and how position matters. Children make a map, explain the key, and ask a partner to use it. Revise an unclear symbol or route. Advanced work considers whether another person can use the route and what information is missing.

A community with shared supplies

Build a model with homes, care, food, play, and travel places chosen through discussion. Assign flexible roles and decide how to share a limited classroom material. Model listening to reasons, proposing a fair rule, trying it, and reviewing its effects. Connect work, goods, services, and environmental care to the model. Do not reduce community life to shopping or occupations alone.

Evidence

Keep a before-and-after map, the child's explanation of a change, and an observed contribution to a shared decision. The pupil map and community-design pages include symbols and planning space. A correct memorized label is less informative than using a representation to help someone.
